Mexican Sky

Hey friends, family, fellow goofballs, naysers and malcontents...we were a big hit at the Sunscreen Film Festival in St. Petersberg FL April 5-8... below is a review done earlier in the year by the good folks at the Tampa Film Review...enjoy and check out the link @ www.mexicanskythemovie.com

Tampa Bay Film Review of Mexican Sky
By Nolan B. Canova and Chris Woods

December 2006

AND AWAY WE GO...
Mexican Sky, written and directed by Ken Collins, featuring Jay Hewlett. A mouthy career criminal takes a sheriff and his deputy hostage in their own squad car in a desperate attempt to flee across the Mexican border. 10 minutes.
This is one of the finest films I have ever seen play at the Tampa Film Review. Ever. The lead lawman, Ray, is played by stand-up comic Jay Hewlett (also a member of Damage Control, Inc.), who is outstanding in his role as the taunted lawman. What is it about stand-up comics that they seem so frequently to be able to cross-over into drama. The reverse isn't usually true, at least I've never known it to happen. Jay's performance is amazing. The mouthy skinhead crook, the one with the child-killer past who with great bravado taunts our heroes all the way to Meh-hee-ko, is played by the director himself, Ken Collins. The quiet Hispanic deputy who drives them, Paul/Pablo (Jamie Clark) will get his showdown at the end. And the ending is quite satisfying. Ken Collins has written some juicy parts for himself and his players. Chad Fukuda's cinematography is breathtaking as is the super-tight editing. Congratulations to Largo Films, Mexican Sky gets my very highest recommendation.

This was a good little piece about a sheriff driving a convict who is a child rapist and murderer, to prison but the con turns the tables on them by pulling a gun on the sheriff and the driver. The tables turn yet again at the end. This film is a great example that you don’t need a big budget and special effects, all you need is a good story and great performances from the actors. Most of the film was shot in a car with the con and sheriff dominating the scene. And a great twist at the end seals the deal.

We are also full swing into the film "Some Foreign War" (see deatails below),which I am acting in and serving as an associate producer and overall best boy!! Don't forget the big wine tasting, comedy and fund raising soiree August 27th, in lovely Pasadena. E-mail me for details: onefunnyguyj@aol.com I'll be shooting all of July and then on tour in August. Independent Film Some Foreign War update:
This July, Jay will be starring in and helping to produce the independent film Some Foreign War. Some Foreign War is a science fiction story about people who band together when they discover they are all participants in the same high-level government experiment that has gone wrong. Written and directed in the tradition and style of the X-files, it is an exciting Sci -Fi thriller that will be sure to grab the critics and film festival producers attention. The Special effects will be awesome with one of the editors of Miami CSI providing the SFX. If you are interested in contributing to the film please read the prospectus below! See ya at the premiere!!!

PURPOSE: To gain return for our investors, entry to film festivals with the goals of industry notice and acquisition, and continued work for us within the entertainment industry.

PROPOSED SCHEDULE: We will begin filming in late June 2006. Filming will take place primarily on weekends, and some evenings as required. Proposed completion of filming will be no later than December 2006, with editing completed by June 2007.

PROPOSED INVESTMENT GOAL: $5,000-$10,000. We plan to acquire funding for this film from outside sources. Funding is needed to cover the expenses of licenses and location fees, food for cast and crew, any necessary overnight accommodations, fees for props, costumes and equipment rental as needed (we already have most of the primary equipment such as cameras, mics, and editing equipment) and payment to the cast and crew (if union). Finally, this amount also incorporates necessary fees for completing press kits and entry fees required for entrance into film competitions.

YOUR RETURN:
Investors/backers contributing amounts from $500-$1,000 will receive credit as an associate producer, as well as a 1% return on any profits after expenses and initial investments are repaid. Your investment may also entitle you to invitations to special screenings at any film festivals we are admitted to, and attendance at corresponding events.

ADDITIONAL WAYS TO HELP:
- Provide a secure location (for use of six hours or more) such as a house, restaurant/bar or outdoor property.

- Provide contact information for available production assistants, editors, special effects professionals or anyone else who would be willing to donate their time/services or work for a nominal fee.

You will receive periodic updates on the progress of the film.

The frog with the wig!

Hey folks, I kicked booty at the recent Comcast SpotLight on Comedy sponsored by Sierra Mist in Boston, MA. As soon as i get a copy of the telecast I'll post it up on Onefunnyguy.com

I have been doing shows in LA and staying busy. If you know anyone interested in being an executive or associate producer on an independent film let me know!

Below is a post that would not fit on the blog profile page. A children's story. Rnjoy! Until we chat it up again...peace jay!

Once upon a time there was a bald frog who lived in the swamp! His name was Gastineu. Gastineu was so self concious he wouldn't even ribiit! He kind of whispered rabbit, which only made the other frogs laugh harder. It was only after a particularily embarrasing afternoon of frog jumping that the frog sought out therapy. The Froggy counselor first got to the issue of Gastineus shyness. What gives with the "rabbit" sound asked the counselor. Well, said Gastineu, many years ago I was a handsome prince who rode the lands in search of my fairy princess. Unfortunetaly, she was in the custody of an evil witch who had her holed up in caverans below the capitol city. I made a brave sojurn into the caverns, and almost made it to the princess to give her the kiss that would free her from her chains. I went head to head with the evil witch only to have a hex placed upon my head. Literallly, my head. She turned me into a bald frog! Now I have to wait for a pretty princess to kiss me. I'm too shy to leave my pad. Well, the counselor said, that is quite a story! But, I think I can help you. He pulled a frog toupee out of his desk and placed it on Gastineus head. The wig made all the difference in the world! He was quite handsome...for a frog! The counselor continued. Go back to your pad, practice your ribbits and your ladies rap. Come back next week and I'll have a surprise for you. Gastineu did as he was told. He came back in a week quite the polished communicator. In the counselors office sat a pretty young maiden who looked quite familar. It was his dream princess. The one he tried to free from the clutches of the wicked witch! The counselor re-introduced them. Gastineu, I belive you know Penelope? Yes, Gastineu said with verve and pinash. She is even more lovely than I remember! Penlope, giggled and swooned at this. Uhmm said the counselor, well, Penolope was in counseling over the death of her emancipater, Prince Charming. Prince charming managed to give her a kiss beneath the caverns and then was struck down by the evil witch. Quite a heinous death I might add. She wrapped him in pasta and then doused him with steaming hot tomato sauce! Emeril brand I think. Anyhoo, she is here making great progress, as you have Gastineu, and I thought you two might like to meet. They both excalimed yes, and Penlope picked Gastineu up and kissed him full on his froggy lips. He immediately turned into Brad Pitt and they married right there in the counselors office. Subsequently, he left Penlope for a movie star and she was heartbroken. You may have read about it in the froggyloids. The moral of the story: You can take the Frog out of the swamp, but you can't take the swamp out of the frog, or even marrying a handsome prince can land you in the pitts!
